Gorillaz’ nieuwe album Plastic Beach uit op 9 maart

Het grootste muzieknieuws is deze week afkomstig van onze favoriete – want enige – tekenfilm-hiphoppopband: Gorillaz. Daags nadat bekend werd dat Gorillaz met een liveshow headliner is op het Amerikaanse Coachella festival, is onthuld dat nieuw album Plastic Beach uitkomt op 8 maart. Tekenaar Jamie Hewlett en muzikant Damon Albarn werkten al een flinke tijd aan de nieuwe plaat, met de Blur-reünie voor Albarn als het ware tussen de bedrijven door. De eerste demo’s doken zelfs al in januari 2009 op.

Vooral de omvangrijke gastenlijst voor deze derde Gorillaz is op z’n minst imposant en verwachtingen opschroevend  te noemen, we noteren: Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def, Bobby Womack, De La Soul, Barry Gibb, The Fall’s Mark E. Smith, Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals) en, voor het eerst weer samenwerkend sinds The Clash: Mick Jones en Paul Simonon. Bent u daar nog?

Fijn, dan is daar nog het verhaal achter de nieuwe CD, dat doet denken aan de serie Lost: de nieuwe muziek is zogenaamd opgenomen op een eiland ergens diep in de oceaan, op het Plastic Beach hoofdkwartier. Verder van het vaste land kun je niet zitten, het is ‘de meest verlaten plek op aarde’…

Eerste voorproefje Stylo streamt sinds woensdagavond op allerlei plekken, ook hieronder, en moet nog wat inwerken, maar de uithaal van Bobby Womack is fantastisch en die baslijn is niks minder dan zwaar verslavend.
